What Is Yoga Therapy?

As a physician and Yoga teacher, and as a healer practicing Yoga Therapy, I often get questions about Yoga Therapy, what it is and how it’s different from Yoga teaching. Yoga Therapy has for many years been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my work as a healer and in my mind not really distinct from my healing practice as a physician. Yoga Therapy taps into the healing modalities of yoga to help reduce or manage symptoms, improve function, restore balance, manage emotions and cope with chronic conditions — both mental and physical. I should note that in recent years The Yoga Alliance (which keeps a Registry of Yoga teachers) has taken pains to say that having yoga teacher training does not qualify a person to claim to be a yoga therapist. These distinctions are still being discussed in the Yoga community, and I present my own ideas about what the differences are here in this podcast. You can also read an opinion from one of the leaders of the Yoga Therapy movement here: [https://yogainternational.com/article/view/The-Distinction-Between-a-Yoga-Class-and-a-Yoga-Therapy-Session] I want to thank my friend and colleague Marquette Latshaw, herself an excellent yoga teacher and personal trainer, for interviewing me on her cool Blog Talk Radio show, The Revolution of Health. Though this interview is from a couple of years ago, it still provides some useful information for people who want to know how Yoga Therapy is used. Feel free to share! Namaste!
